Booking your child’s first speech-language evaluation can feel like a step into the unknown. Knowing what to expect ahead of time — what happens, how long it takes, and what you’ll walk away with — can take a lot of the uncertainty out of it.
Why an assessment is the necessary first step
Before any therapy plan is built, a speech-language pathologist needs a clear, individualized picture of your child’s specific strengths and needs. A thorough assessment is what makes therapy targeted and effective, rather than generic.
What a typical assessment covers
- A case history discussion with you, covering developmental milestones, medical history, and your specific concerns.
- Standardized testing appropriate for your child’s age, measuring skills like vocabulary, sentence structure, and comprehension.
- Informal observation of your child during play or conversation, capturing how they communicate in a natural setting.
- An oral-motor and speech sound screening, checking how clearly your child produces individual sounds.
- Depending on your child’s needs, additional areas like social communication, fluency, voice, or feeding may also be assessed.
How long an evaluation typically takes
Most comprehensive assessments take somewhere between 45 minutes and 90 minutes, depending on your child’s age and the areas being evaluated. Very young children or children with limited attention may need the assessment broken into shorter segments across more than one visit.
What happens after the assessment
- You’ll receive a summary of your child’s results, explained in plain, jargon-free language.
- If therapy is recommended, you’ll get a clear picture of specific goals and how often sessions would occur.
- If your child’s skills fall within the typical range, you’ll leave with genuine reassurance — and guidance on what to watch for going forward.
- You’ll have the chance to ask questions and share any additional concerns before deciding on next steps.
How to prepare your child (and yourself)
There’s no special preparation needed — a well-rested, well-fed child tends to engage best, but assessments are designed to work with children as they are, not as they’d be on a perfect day. As the parent, it can help to jot down specific examples of your concerns beforehand, so nothing gets forgotten in the moment.
