Occupational Therapy for Sensory Processing Disorder in Myrtle Beach, SC
Does your child seem overwhelmed by sounds, textures, or movement — or crave intense sensory experiences that seem hard to satisfy? Sensory processing challenges can affect how children participate in daily life, learn, play, and connect with others. Occupational therapy is one of the most effective interventions available.
At Communication Cottage Therapy, our pediatric OTs provide specialized sensory-based occupational therapy for children in Myrtle Beach and throughout the Grand Strand — including in our fully equipped on-site Sensory Gym.
What Is Sensory Processing Disorder?
Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) occurs when the brain has difficulty receiving and responding to sensory information. Children with SPD may be sensory-avoidant (overwhelmed by input they find too intense) or sensory-seeking (constantly looking for more stimulation than their environment provides). Many children display a mix of both.
SPD is not a formal DSM diagnosis but is widely recognized by occupational therapists as a genuine challenge affecting development and function. It frequently co-occurs with autism, ADHD, anxiety, and developmental delays.
Signs of sensory processing difficulties in children may include:
- Extreme sensitivity to clothing textures, tags, or tight-fitting items
- Covering ears frequently or distress in noisy environments
- Difficulty with messy play (avoidance of sand, paint, or food textures)
- Constant movement, spinning, or crashing into things
- Difficulty transitioning between activities or environments
- Delayed reactions to pain or not noticing injuries
- Challenges with self-regulation and emotional meltdowns
Our Sensory Gym
Communication Cottage Therapy’s in-clinic Sensory Gym is specifically designed to support children with sensory processing challenges. The gym features:
- Rock climbing wall — builds proprioceptive input and motor planning
- Trampoline — provides deep pressure and vestibular input
- Therapeutic swing — vestibular stimulation in a controlled environment
- Slide — supports full-body movement and body awareness
These aren’t just fun activities — each piece of equipment is a therapeutic tool used intentionally by our OTs to provide the “just right challenge” that helps a child’s nervous system learn to process sensory input more effectively.
Our Sensory OT Approach
Our OTs use sensory integration-informed therapy, a well-researched approach developed by Dr. A. Jean Ayres that uses carefully graded sensory experiences to help the nervous system respond more adaptively. Sessions are always child-led and play-based, because children learn best — and work hardest — when they’re genuinely engaged.
Our Lead OT, Julie brings specialized training in reflex integration and trauma-informed care, both of which play an important role in sensory-based intervention. Our team takes a whole-child perspective, understanding that sensory challenges rarely exist in isolation.
In-Clinic and In-Home Sensory OT
While our Sensory Gym and treatment spaces in-clinic are tremendous resources, we also offer in-home occupational therapy for families across Myrtle Beach and Horry County. In-home sessions allow our OTs to assess and address sensory challenges in the actual environments where they occur — and coach caregivers on strategies to create a sensory-supportive home environment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can sensory processing disorder be treated?
While SPD is a neurological difference that doesn’t simply “go away,” targeted occupational therapy can make significant improvements in how a child processes and responds to sensory input. Many children with consistent OT services make meaningful gains in independence, tolerance, regulation, and participation in daily activities.
Is sensory therapy just play?
It looks like play — and that’s intentional. Children engage fully when activities are intrinsically motivating. But every activity in a sensory OT session is purposefully designed to address specific therapeutic goals. The “play” is the treatment.
