Pediatric Occupational Therapy
in Myrtle Beach, SC
Helping children gain independence, build confidence, and thrive in their daily lives — that’s the heart of pediatric occupational therapy at Communication Cottage Therapy. Our OT team serves children across the Myrtle Beach and Grand Strand area, delivering individualized, play-based therapy. We offer services in-clinic, in-home, and in community settings (daycare, library, park).
From fine motor skill development to sensory processing support, we partner with children and their families to make meaningful progress in the activities that matter most — getting dressed, eating, playing, learning, and engaging with the world around them.
What Is Pediatric Occupational Therapy?
Occupational Therapy (OT) for children focuses on building the skills they need to participate in their everyday “occupations” — which for kids means playing, learning, self-care, and connecting with others. Pediatric OTs assess challenges in:
- Fine motor skills — grasping, writing, cutting, self-care tasks like buttons and zippers
- Gross motor skills — coordination, balance, and body awareness
- Sensory processing — how a child responds to sensory input (touch, movement, sound, etc.)
- Self-regulation — managing emotions and behavior in different environments
- Activities of daily living (ADLs) — dressing, feeding, bathing, and personal care
- Visual-motor integration — eye-hand coordination for handwriting and learning tasks
- Play skills — purposeful, age-appropriate engagement through play

Our Sensory Gym
Communication Cottage Therapy’s clinic features a fully equipped Sensory Gym designed to support children with sensory processing needs. The gym includes a rock climbing wall, swing, and slide — creating a therapeutic environment where children can explore movement, challenge their sensory systems, and build confidence through play.
For many children, the Sensory Gym is a highlight of their therapy experience. It provides a motivating, engaging space where OT goals are embedded into activities children genuinely enjoy.
Our Approach
We use a play-based, child-centered approach to occupational therapy. Our OTs design sessions around each child’s interests, strengths, and goals, ensuring therapy feels fun and purposeful rather than clinical or rigid.
We also believe deeply in the power of parent and caregiver involvement. Every session includes time to coach families on strategies they can use at home to reinforce progress in daily routines. Therapy doesn’t stop when the session ends — it continues in the moments between.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my child needs occupational therapy?
Signs may include difficulty with fine motor tasks (writing, scissors, buttons), sensory sensitivities (avoidance of textures, sounds, or movement), challenges with self-care routines, poor coordination, or difficulty regulating emotions or behavior. An OT evaluation is the best way to assess your child’s specific needs.
What is the difference between OT and PT?
Occupational therapy focuses on daily life function, sensory processing, fine motor skills, and participation in activities. Physical therapy focuses primarily on gross motor development, mobility, strength, and movement-based function. Many children benefit from both. Of note Communication Cottage Therapy does not offer Physical Therapy at this time.
Do you offer both clinic and in-home OT?
Yes — we offer in-clinic sessions at our Myrtle Beach Clinic and in-home therapy visits for families across Horry County and the Grand Strand.
