Telehealth has opened up real access to speech therapy approaches for autistic children that used to require a long drive or a long waitlist. Here’s a plain-language look at some of the approaches families commonly encounter, and how to think about choosing between them.
Why approach matters as much as access
Autistic children are a genuinely diverse group, and no single technique works identically for every child. The value of telehealth is that it widens access to more specialized therapists — but the choice of approach still needs to be matched to your individual child, ideally guided by a qualified speech-language pathologist.
Approaches families commonly encounter online
- AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) support — including app-based systems — taught and coached through telehealth sessions.
- Naturalistic, play-based language approaches that build communication through everyday interaction rather than drills.
- Parent-mediated coaching models, where the therapist guides a caregiver in real time to use specific strategies throughout the day.
- Social communication and pragmatic language support, often incorporating visual supports shared over video call.
What tends to translate well to a screen
Parent coaching translates particularly well to telehealth, since a caregiver is already present and can be guided live. AAC device setup, programming, and coaching also works well online, since much of it involves screen-based tools already.
What may need an in-person component
Very young children, children who need hands-on physical prompting, or those still building foundational attention and engagement skills may benefit from at least some in-person sessions alongside any telehealth support — a hybrid model many families find works best.
Choosing what’s right for your child
Rather than searching for a single “best” online technique, it’s worth starting with an evaluation from a speech-language pathologist experienced with autism, who can recommend an approach — or combination of approaches — suited to your child’s communication style, interests, and goals.
