Why We Encourage Parent Involvement in Every Session
When most people picture therapy, they imagine dropping their child off, waiting outside, and picking up a “finished” child an hour later. It’s an understandable picture — and it’s not how we work. At Communication Cottage Therapy, parents aren’t visitors to the session. They’re part of it. Whatever the setting, every session we offer is built around one belief: therapy works best when the people who know a child best are in the room, learning right alongside them.
The magic word: carryover
In therapy, the real goal isn’t what a child can do during a session. It’s what a child can do the rest of the week, in real life, once the therapist has gone home. That’s called carryover, and it’s where lasting progress is won or lost.
Here’s the challenge with any model that keeps parents on the sidelines: a child might master a skill beautifully with a therapist, then struggle to use that same skill later, at home, where the real practicing happens. When parents are coached alongside their child from day one, there’s no gap to bridge. The strategies travel home because you were there when they were built.
Why parents are the secret ingredient
Whether we’re working on speech, sensory regulation, or feeding, you already spend far more hours with your child than we ever will. That makes you the most consistent therapist your child has. Being present and involved throughout care means:
- Comfort and confidence: a child who has a trusted parent close by engages more freely and shows their real abilities, rather than performing for a stranger.
- Real-time coaching: you see exactly how a strategy is modeled in the moment, not secondhand from a report afterward.
- Strategies that fit your family: we build on your routines, your child’s favorite toys, and the moments that already happen in your week.
- Confidence between sessions: you leave knowing what to try at snack time, bath time, or bedtime, not just hoping you remember it right.
A clinic that feels like home
We know in-home and daycare-based therapy isn’t possible for every family, and that’s okay — it’s exactly why we’ve built our clinic to feel less like a waiting room and more like a family’s living room. Soft seating, familiar toys, and a warm, unhurried pace are part of the design, not an afterthought.
The goal is the same whether we come to you or you come to us: a space where your child feels safe enough to be themselves, and where you feel welcome enough to stay close, ask questions, and be part of the work.
Built-in coaching for caregivers
Because you’re present — whether that’s in your own home or in our clinic — therapy naturally becomes a partnership. We don’t just work with your child; we model strategies for you, hand off ideas you can use during the week, and answer the questions that come up in real life. You leave equipped with tools that actually fit your family, and that’s the multiplier effect: an hour of therapy becomes a week of progress.
Bringing it all together
Whether it’s speech and language, occupational therapy, or feeding therapy, the same belief runs underneath it all: a child grows fastest when the people who love them most are part of the plan, not just the pick-up. That’s why parent involvement is woven into every session we offer, at your home or in ours.
